STEMCELLTechnologieswaslaunchedin1993whenfounderandCEOAllenEavesneededawaytomeettheincreasingdemandsforhisstandardized,cost-effectivecellculturemediaforgrowingblood-formingstemcells.Atthetime,EaveswasahematologistandcancerresearcherheadingtheTerryFoxLaboratories(TFL)andheadofclinicalhematologyattheUniversityofBritishColumbiainVancouver,Canada.Unsatisfiedwithcommerciallyavailablecellculturereagents,Eaves’researchgroupattheTFLbeganmakingtheirownhematopoieticstemcellculturemediausingthehighestqualitymaterialstheycouldfind.Colleaguesalsowantedtousethismedia,andEaveswasabletosupplementhisresearchfundsbysellingculturemediatootherlabgroups.

Eventuallythedemandforthemediafromresearchersaroundtheworldwarrantedbuildingadesignatedcleanroomforproduction.TheTFLdidnothavethefundingandinstead,Eaveswasencouragedtopurchasethebusinessandcreateanindependentcompany.MortgaginghishouseandreceivingaloanfromWesternEconomicDiversification,EaveswasabletobuildacleanroomandSTEMCELLTechnologiesInc.wasbornonJuly2,1993.STEMCELLhasbecomethelargestbiotechcompanyinCanadaandcontinuestoreinvestallprofitsbackintodevelopingproductstobettersupporttheinternationalresearchcommunity.Asof2016,thecompanyemploysmorethan800peopleglobally,withoverone-thirdofthoseholdingaPhDorMSc,andthemajorityofemployeeshavingaBScorEngineeringdegree.Alargenumberofthecompany’semployeesarelocatedinVancouver,Canadawithadditionalemployeesandfacilitiesin11othercountries.
